Suleiman has recently completed secondary school education at Mikindani Dole School in Unguja West ‘A’ District.
He was among 20 students who scored Division One in the 2021 National Certificate of Secondary Education Examinations (CSEE).
The results impressed teachers, parents and education stakeholders because it was the first time such performance was attained since the school was established.
Although the school was not one of the top 10 schools listed in the examination results nationally, Mikindani was one of the top 10 schools in the isles.
However, this success was not realized by accident but it was attributed to students zeal and teacher-to-student motivation, according to the School Head Master, Rajab Ali Issa.
He said the school administration recognized and honored all the students who passed their exams with flying colours, adding, “We rewarded all the students who scored Division One in their national exams” he said.
He said ‘the top student award initiative’ which was started last year was deliberately introduced to encourage the students to excel in their examinations, adding that last year 20 students who passed the exams with flying colours were awarded various prizes.
"We buy 'As' and 'Bs' results with a lot of money to motivate other students to perform better in their exams," he said.
The Headmaster told the Zanzibar Mail that the students who performed excellently in the last exams received awards from their teachers during ceremony attended by the Minister of State, President’s Office (Labour, Economic and Investment), Mudrik Ramadhani Soraga, held at Bububu.
“We are impressed with your performance in the last year's CSEE results. We are proud to be among the top 10 schools in Zanzibar. If we continue taking this path we will have a bright future in education,” the minister told the banquet gathering.
“This is one way of promoting quality education in our school,” he said and added, “during last year’s CSEE results, the school produced a student who scored Division One with nine points. We are proud of this great achievement,” the minister said.
The Headmaster said the school also produced many students with higher grades which qualified all 72 candidates to continue with A-level studies.
“We organized a special gathering for them to appreciate their academic excellence in line with the government’s vision of promoting quality education,” said Rajab.
According to the school headmaster, out of 72 candidates who sat for the exams, 20 (27.7percent) scored Division One of whom five were female candidates and 15 were males while 40 candidates of whom 25 females attained Division Two and 12 scored Division Three of whom nine were females.
He said the performance was better compared to the 2020 exam results, where five candidates out of 84 scored Division One, 32, attained Division Two, 37 got Division Three while nine got Division Zero.
